A microscopic microscope for microfluidics chips....

(Steve QUAKE's lab)

Picture : precise molding of a 100µm - lens using controlled surface tension.

We found new methods for easy and costless manufacture of high-precision optics. Any shape or size can be obtained through micro-molding.

The "soft" lenses obtained can be easily assembled and we reconstituted a complete microscope.

The size of the "objective" is only 1 mm total; made of 4 lenses, its power of magnification and Numerical Aperture (1.32 !!)  was sufficient to observe fluoresent bacteria in microchips, using only a blue LED as light source.
